Harold McWhorter is a Tallapoosa, Georgia native. He is a graduate of Steadman High School, West Georgia College and Auburn University. At Auburn he received two Masters Degrees. For sixteen years, Harold worked in the Georgia public school system – serving as high school basketball coach, guidance counselor, teacher, and principal at Tallapoosa High School and Mt. Zion High School. During the sixteen year span, Harold also served as music director at the Tallapoosa First United Methodist Church. Since 1976 Harold has been a full-time musician, appearing regularly at Christian supper clubs throughout the South, and filling concert, banquet, revival, camp meeting, and special occasion dates. Harold regularly entertains at several state conventions each year. He has written over 400 songs and recorded nine albums. Harold’s recording of: Murillo’s Lesson: was, for two weeks, Number 1 in Atlanta on WSB Radios Hit Parade. It was in the Top 20 for fourteen straight weeks. His compositions “Living On The Mountain”, “America, I Love You”, “Bring Back The Songs”, and :Sin Will Take You Farther:, have performed on network TV and radio, Artists who have recorded songs written by Harold include THE CATHEDRALS, THE INSPIRATIONS, THE CHUCK WAGON GANG, and THE FLURRYS: 1991 “Into The Choir”, “Homecoming Day”, and “Love’s What He’s All About”, by THE CATHEDRALS; 1983 “Love’s What He’s All About” by THE CHUCK WAGON GANG; 1982 “Bring Back The Songs” by THE INSPIRATIONS; THE FLURRYS have recorded two of Harold’s compositions “Bring Back The Songs” and “Sin Will Take You Farther”. THE REX NELON SINGERS have asked to record “Sin Will Take You Farther”, and CONNIE HOPPER has asked to record “Homecoming Day:, both written by Harold. The Cathedrals record of Harold’s composition, “Sin Will Take You Farther” reached No. 1 in the Nation in August, 1989, (Cashbox Magazine). It was on the National Hit Charts for eleven consecutive months. The group GREATER VISION also recorded “sin Will Take You Farther”. Harold’s album LOVE’S WHAT HE’S ALL ABOUT, was in the Top 24 on Radio Station KFMR, the “Christian Voice of the Bay Area” in Oakland, California. Harold was recently appointed to the fifteen member board of the recording industry for the state of Georgia. He is often called on to write commercials for radio and TV. Harold often appears with THE HAROLD McWHORTER TRIO. The trio is composed of his brother Buck McWhorter, and cousin, Dianne Gray, Harold’s recent TV appearances include Nashville, Atlanta, Miami, Knoxville, Clearwater, Florida, Columbus, Georgia, and Savannah, Georgia. Live radio programs on which Harold has performed include: The ‘Little’ Roy Wiggins Show” in Nashville, and the pose “Opry” Saturday Nigh Show at the Ernest Tubb Record Shop in Nashville. Harold’s composition, “Walking Side by Side”, is background music for the “American Masters” TV production of “Aretha Franklin: Queen of Soul”, filmed in 1990.
